A warm, comforting side dish featuring tender potatoes in a creamy sauce with a golden, bubbly top. Perfect for holidays, potlucks, or cozy dinners.

Ingredients

  • Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • Heavy cream
  • Whole milk
  • Unsalted butter
  • All-purpose flour
  • Garlic, minced
  • Onion, thinly sliced
  • Cheddar cheese, shredded (optional)
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish lightly with butter.
  2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes to about 1/8-inch thickness for uniform cooking.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually add heavy cream and milk, whisking constantly. Stir in garlic, salt, and pepper, and simmer until thickened (about 5 minutes).
  4. Arrange a layer of potatoes in the baking dish, overlapping slightly. Add a layer of onions on top. Pour some sauce over the layer, spreading evenly. Repeat until all ingredients are layered, finishing with sauce on top.
  5. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top (if using).
  6. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  7. Let the dish rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use almond milk and vegan butter. Customize with Gruyère or Parmesan cheese for a unique flavor. Prep ahead and reheat for convenience.
