Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or almond flour for gluten-free)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 2/3 cup whole milk, cold (or dairy-free milk)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 4 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (for macerating strawberries)
  • 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream, chilled
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425Β°F (220Β°C). In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cut in cold, cubed butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk milk and egg together, then pour into dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, about 8–10 pieces.
  5. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool completely on a wire rack.
  6. Toss sliced strawberries with 2 tablespoons sugar and let sit for at least 15 minutes to macerate.
  7. Heat 1/2 cup heavy cream in a small saucepan until just simmering. Pour over chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Let sit 2 minutes, then stir until smooth. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  8. Whip 1 cup heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  9. In a trifle dish, layer shortcake pieces, macerated strawberries, chocolate ganache, and whipped cream. Repeat layers until dish is full, finishing with whipped cream and garnish with strawberry slices and chocolate shavings.
  10. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
