A unique twist on traditional falafel, this recipe combines the natural sweetness of roasted sweet potatoes with chickpeas, paired with a creamy tahini sauce for a wholesome and delicious dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, roasted and mashed
  • 1 cup cooked or canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour or chickpea flour
  • Olive oil for brushing or frying
  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 24 tablespoons water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400Β°F (200Β°C). Wash and pierce the sweet potatoes with a fork. Roast them on a baking sheet for 40-50 minutes, or until soft and tender. Let them cool, then scoop out the flesh and mash it.
  2. In a food processor, combine the mashed sweet potato, chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cumin, coriander, paprika, salt, and pepper. Pulse until the mixture is cohesive but not completely smooth.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and add the flour gradually, mixing until the mixture holds together well and isn’t too sticky.
  4. Scoop about 2 tablespoons of the mixture and roll it into a ball or flatten into a patty. Repeat until all the mixture is used.
  5. For baking: Preheat your oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C). Place the falafels on a parchment-lined baking sheet and brush them lightly with olive oil. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  6. For frying: Heat a skillet with a generous amount of olive oil over medium heat. Cook the falafels for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden and crispy.
  7. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together tahini, lemon juice, garlic, and salt. Gradually add water, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  8. Plate the falafels and drizzle with the creamy tahini sauce. Garnish with extra parsley or sesame seeds for a pop of freshness.
