Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 3 cups broccoli florets, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup sliced red bell pepper (optional)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce (or Tamari for gluten-free)
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce (or hoisin sauce for substitution)
  • 1 tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds (optional garnish)
  • 2 tbsp sliced green onions (optional garnish)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or avocado oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the beef against the grain (about 1/4-inch thick).
  2. In a mixing bowl, toss beef with cornstarch, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Let marinate for 10 minutes.
  3. Prep broccoli florets, slice bell pepper (if using), mince garlic, and grate ginger. Set aside.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey or brown sugar, water, toasted sesame oil, rice vinegar, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  5. Heat wok or large skillet over high heat. Add 1 tbsp vegetable oil.
  6. Add beef in a single layer. Sear for 1-2 minutes per side until browned and just cooked through. Remove beef to a plate and cover loosely.
  7. Add another 1 tbsp oil to the pan. Add broccoli and bell pepper. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until bright green and just tender.
  8. Add garlic and ginger, stir for 30 seconds until fragrant. If pan is dry, add 1-2 tbsp water.
  9. Return beef to pan with veggies. Pour in sesame soy sauce. Stir constantly for 1-2 minutes until everything is coated and sauce thickens slightly.
  10. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  11. Remove from heat. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.
  12. Serve immediately over steamed rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice.

Notes

Slice beef thinly against the grain for tenderness. Prep all ingredients before cooking, as stir-frying moves quickly. For gluten-free, use Tamari and substitute oyster sauce with extra Tamari and a splash of fish sauce. You can swap veggies based on season or preference. If sauce is too thick, add a splash of water; if too thin, simmer briefly. Leftovers keep well and flavors deepen overnight.
