A quick and budget-friendly twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak, featuring savory ground beef, caramelized onions, and gooey melted cheese in soft hoagie rolls.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 medium yellow or white onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls, sliced lengthwise
  • 12 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the onion and bell peppers. Set them aside. Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise and keep them ready for assembly.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers. Sauté until they’re soft and lightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the ground beef. Break it up with a spatula as it cooks. Sprinkle with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 7-8 minutes.
  4. Stir in 1-2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce to the cooked ground beef. Mix well and let it simmer for 2 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  5. Return the sautéed onions and bell peppers to the skillet with the ground beef. Stir everything together so the flavors meld beautifully.
  6. Lightly toast the hoagie rolls in the oven or skillet (2-3 minutes) until warm and slightly crispy.
  7. Spoon the beef and veggie mixture generously onto the toasted hoagie rolls. Top with slices of provolone cheese.
  8. Place the assembled sandwiches in the oven or under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, just until the cheese melts and becomes gooey.
  9. Serve immediately while the sandwiches are warm and the cheese is melted. Enjoy!

Notes

[‘Caramelize the onions and peppers slowly for maximum sweetness.’, ‘Toast the hoagie rolls lightly to prevent sogginess.’, ‘Double the recipe for leftovers.’, ‘Experiment with different veggies or cheeses for variety.’]
