A reliable, slow-cooker side dish featuring sweet potatoes caramelized in a rich glaze of butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, and warm spices. This ‘set it and forget it’ recipe delivers tender, flavorful yams without the hassle of constant stirring.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3–4 pounds sweet potatoes (Garnet or Jewel varieties), peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds or half-moons
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup real maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • A pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, and slice the sweet potatoes into uniform 1/2-inch rounds or half-moons. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl or saucepan until liquid.
  3. Pour the melted butter over the potatoes. Add the brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, orange zest, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Toss the mixture thoroughly until every potato slice is evenly coated in the glaze.
  5. Transfer the coated potatoes to a 4-6 quart slow cooker insert, spreading them out evenly.
  6. Cover and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  7. Optional: For a thicker glaze, remove the lid and cook on HIGH for the last 30 minutes, or stir in a cornstarch slurry (1 tsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp cold water) for the last 15 minutes.
  8. Gently stir before serving and enjoy warm.

Notes

For best results, use Garnet or Jewel sweet potatoes as they are naturally sweeter and creamier. Avoid overcrowding the slow cooker to prevent steaming instead of braising. If you prefer a dairy-free version, substitute butter with coconut oil. The dish can be prepped up to 24 hours in advance by slicing and seasoning the potatoes, then storing them covered in the refrigerator.
