A simple, rustic, and comforting autumn sangria made with red wine, crisp apples, sweet pears, and warm spices. This easy-to-make cocktail is perfect for hosting or relaxing on a weeknight.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 750ml bottle dry red wine (such as Malbec, Pinot Noir, or Merlot)
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons orange liqueur (such as Triple sec or Cointreau)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 large crisp apples (such as Honeycrisp or Fuji), sliced thin
  • 2 large pears (such as Bartlett or Bosc), sliced thin
  • 1 large orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise pod (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash all fruit thoroughly. Slice apples and pears into thin wedges and oranges into rounds.
  2. Place sliced apples, pears, and oranges into a large pitcher. Sprinkle brown sugar over the fruit and gently toss to coat. Let sit for 10 minutes to draw out juices.
  3. Pour the red wine, orange juice, and orange liqueur into the pitcher. Add cinnamon sticks and star anise if using. Stir gently to combine without crushing the fruit.
  4. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or up to 4 hours (overnight is best) to allow flavors to infuse.
  5. Right before serving, add sparkling water and stir gently. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness if needed. Pour over ice and serve.

Notes

Use fresh orange juice for best flavor; bottled juice can taste bitter. Do not chop fruit too small to prevent mushiness. Chill wine before making. Add sparkling water only right before serving to maintain fizz. Can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
