A rich, smooth, and custard-like sweet potato casserole stabilized with cream cheese and topped with a crispy, buttery pecan mixture. This recipe avoids the common pitfalls of watery sweet potatoes for a perfect holiday side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2–3 lbs large sweet potatoes (Garnet or Jewel varieties)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup pecan halves
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Pierce sweet potatoes with a fork and roast on a baking sheet for 45-60 minutes until very soft. Let cool until handleable.
  2. Cut potatoes in half, scoop out the flesh, and discard skins. Place flesh in a food processor and blend until smooth.
  3. Add softened butter, cream cheese, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to the food processor. Pulse until smooth and creamy.
  4. Toast pecans on a baking sheet at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes until fragrant. Let cool slightly and chop roughly.
  5. In a small bowl, mix chopped pecans with melted butter, brown sugar, flour, and a pinch of salt until it resembles wet sand.
  6. Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly into a 9×13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the top.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes until the topping is golden brown and crispy.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

Ensure butter and cream cheese are at room temperature to prevent lumps. Toasting the pecans is essential for flavor. If the mixture is too thin, squeeze excess moisture from cooked potatoes. For a gluten-free version, swap flour for almond flour or GF blend. For dairy-free, use coconut milk and oil.
