These crispy apple dumplings offer the flavor of classic apple pie without the fuss, featuring golden, flaky puff pastry wrapped around spiced apple wedges and coated in a sticky cinnamon sugar glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Wash, peel (optional), and core the apples, cutting them into 1/2 inch thick wedges.
  3. In a medium saucepan, whisk together granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add water and vanilla, then heat over medium until dissolved and bubbling for 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in melted butter.
  4. Unroll puff pastry onto a floured surface and cut into squares or rectangles.
  5. Place an apple wedge in the center of each pastry square. Fold corners over the apple and pinch edges to seal, placing them seam-side down in the baking dish.
  6. Pour the warm cinnamon sugar glaze evenly over the dumplings, ensuring it gets into the gaps.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until pastry is puffed, golden brown, and apples are tender.
  8. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

Ensure the oven is fully preheated to help the pastry puff. Keep the seam of the dumplings on the bottom to prevent leaking. If the tops brown too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil. For best texture, reheat leftovers in the oven rather than the microwave.
