crispy mummy pretzel dogs - featured image

A spooky and savory Halloween appetizer featuring hot dogs wrapped in pretzel dough, baked until golden brown and crispy. This easy-to-make snack is perfect for parties and requires minimal effort for maximum visual impact.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Hot dogs (beef, turkey, or pork)
  • Pretzel dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • Unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt or pretzel salt
  • Mustard seeds (optional)
  • Shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. If using store-bought dough, let it come to room temperature. If making from scratch, ensure the dough is rested and smooth.
  3. Cut the dough into strips approximately 1 inch wide and long enough to wrap around a hot dog with overlap.
  4. Place a hot dog on a strip and wrap it like a mummy, leaving small gaps for the eyes.
  5. If adding cheese, place a small amount inside the dough before wrapping.
  6. Brush the wrapped dogs lightly with the egg wash to ensure a deep, golden-brown color.
  7. Sprinkle coarse sea salt over the top and add mustard seeds if desired.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is deep golden brown and hot dogs are heated through.
  9. Let cool for 5 minutes on the pan before serving warm with mustard or ketchup.

Notes

If the dough starts to brown too quickly, cover the baking sheet loosely with foil. Ensure your oven is fully preheated for even results. Cold dough is hard to work with, so let it sit out for 10-15 minutes before wrapping. Do not wrap the dough too tightly as hot dogs expand in the oven.
