A visually stunning and delicious appetizer featuring a flaky puff pastry spiderweb topped with black sesame seeds, served with crisp vegetables and a creamy homemade ranch dip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed but still cold
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 packet (1 ounce) dry ranch dressing mix
  • 1 tablespoon black sesame seeds
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Vegetables: celery sticks, carrot sticks, cucumber rounds, bell pepper strips
  • Optional garnish: fresh chives or parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out one sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut into a large circle (approx. 10 inches). Place on prepared baking sheet.
  3. Using a sharp paring knife, cut 8-10 lines from the center outward to the edge, then cut smaller lines between them to create a radial web pattern. Be careful not to cut too close to the edge.
  4. Brush the entire surface of the pastry with the egg wash.
  5. Sprinkle black sesame seeds evenly over the top and press gently to adhere.
  6. Sprinkle a tiny pinch of sea salt over the top.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes until puffed and golden brown. Let cool slightly.
  8. While pastry bakes, whisk together sour cream, mayonnaise, and ranch seasoning mix until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  9. Wash and cut vegetables into uniform sticks and rounds.
  10. Place the cooled web in the center of a large serving platter. Arrange vegetables around the web, tucking them under the edges. Serve ranch dip in a small bowl in the center or alongside.

Notes

Keep the dough cold to ensure proper flakiness. If the kitchen is warm, chill the rolled dough for 10 minutes before baking. The dip should be cold to contrast with the warm pastry. Store baked web and dip separately; web keeps at room temp for 2 days, dip in fridge for 3 days. Reheat web in oven to restore crispness.
