These mini football helmet deviled eggs are a fun and delicious game day appetizer that looks like tiny football helmets. They’re easy to make with simple ingredients and are sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Black sesame seeds or poppy seeds (for face mask detail)
  • Chives or green onion tops (for helmet stripe detail, optional)

Instructions

  1. Hard boil the eggs: Place eggs in a single layer in a large pot. Cover with cold water by about an inch. Bring to a rolling boil over high heat, then cover the pot, remove from heat, and let sit for exactly 10 minutes. While they sit, prepare a bowl of ice water. Transfer eggs to the ice bath immediately and let cool completely—about 10 minutes.
  2. Peel carefully: Gently crack the eggs all over, then peel under running cold water. Pat the peeled eggs dry with paper towels.
  3. Slice for the helmet shape: Cut each egg in half lengthwise, but angle your knife slightly so you get one half that’s slightly taller and more rounded on top (helmet dome) and the other half flatter and more oval (base). Gently remove the yolks into a bowl, keeping the whites intact.
  4. Trim the whites: Take the taller, rounder half and trim a tiny sliver off the bottom so it sits flat. Cut a small notch at the front edge (about 1/4 inch deep and 1/2 inch wide) for the face mask opening. For the flatter base half, trim a small amount off the bottom so it sits level.
  5. Make the filling: Mash the egg yolks with a fork until finely crumbled. Add mayonnaise, yellow mustard, white vinegar, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Mix until completely smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  6. Fill the whites: Transfer the filling to a piping bag fitted with a small round tip (or a zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped). Pipe the filling into the notch area of each helmet dome piece to create the face mask area.
  7. Assemble the helmets: Place a small dollop of filling on the serving platter where each helmet will sit. Press the trimmed base half into the filling to anchor it. Then carefully place the helmet dome half on top, angled slightly forward so the face mask notch faces front. Gently press together.
  8. Add the details: Using a toothpick, place tiny black sesame seeds or poppy seeds in a grid pattern across the face mask filling area. For the helmet stripe, use a small piece of chive or green onion top placed lengthwise down the center of the helmet dome.
  9. Chill before serving: Place the assembled helmets on a serving platter and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes. Sprinkle a light dusting of smoked paprika over the top just before serving.

Notes

Use older eggs (at least a week old) for easier peeling. The angled cut is crucial for the helmet shape. For a lighter filling, swap half the mayo with plain Greek yogurt. Assemble the helmets the day of the party for best texture. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
