These crispy, golden mummy hot dogs are a festive and easy Halloween party snack made by wrapping hot dogs in puff pastry strips. They are quick to prepare, require simple ingredients, and are perfect for kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (17 ounces) puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 8–10 standard beef or pork hot dogs
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • Yellow mustard (for eyes)
  • Vegetable oil (for brushing baking sheet)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly brush with vegetable oil.
  3. Allow puff pastry to thaw at room temperature for 30-40 minutes until pliable but still cold.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, unroll and gently roll out the puff pastry to about 1/8 inch thickness.
  5. Cut the puff pastry into 1-inch wide strips using a pizza cutter or sharp knife.
  6. Prick the hot dogs all over with a fork to prevent bursting during baking.
  7. Wrap a pastry strip around each hot dog, spiraling from one end to the other, leaving about an inch exposed at the top for the face.
  8. Place wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
  9. Brush the pastry generously with the egg wash mixture.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  11. While hot, cut two small slits near the top of each hot dog and squeeze a dot of yellow mustard into each for the eyes.

Notes

Ensure puff pastry is cold when handling to prevent sticking and maintain flakiness. Pricking the hot dogs is crucial to prevent them from bursting in the oven. If the dough gets too warm, chill it for 10 minutes. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free puff pastry. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven at 350°F to restore crispiness.
