Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ¾ cups (350g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk, room temperature
  • 16 oz (450g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • ½ cup (120ml) heavy cream, whipped to soft peaks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups (about 450g) fresh blueberries, washed and dried
  • 1 ½ cups (about 225g) strawberries, sliced
  • Optional: edible silver stars or sprinkles for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking pan with butter or non-stick spray and lightly dust with flour.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together sifted flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer until fluffy and pale, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, fully incorporating each before adding the next. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. With mixer on low, add the flour mixture in three parts, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with flour. Mix just until combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan, spread evenly, and smooth the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool cake in pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a large bowl, beat softened cream cheese with powdered sugar until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip heavy cream to soft peaks.
  9. Gently fold whipped cream and vanilla extract into cream cheese mixture.
  10. Once cake is cool, spread cream cheese filling evenly over the top.
  11. Arrange sliced strawberries in neat horizontal lines to create red stripes.
  12. Fill the top left corner with fresh blueberries to create the blue field of the flag.
  13. Chill the assembled cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving.

Notes

Use fresh blueberries for vibrant color and to prevent sogginess. Chill the cake before slicing to keep the cream cheese filling firm and the flag design clean. Room temperature ingredients help create a tender crumb. Avoid overmixing the batter to keep the cake light and fluffy. For dairy-free or gluten-free adaptations, substitute ingredients as suggested in the recipe.
