Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2–3 cups powdered sugar (confectioners’ sugar), sifted
  • 2 tablespoons meringue powder
  • 4–6 tablespoons water
  • Black gel food coloring
  • White food coloring or extra powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy (3-4 minutes).
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture on low speed, mixing just until combined.
  5. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Scoop about 1.5 tablespoons of dough per cookie, roll into balls, and place on baking sheets 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are lightly golden; centers should look slightly soft.
  9. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. While cookies cool, mix powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water to form a thick, pipeable consistency.
  11. Divide icing into two bowls; leave one white and add black food coloring to the other.
  12. Pipe a thick, irregular circle of white icing onto each cooled cookie.
  13. Pipe small dots of black icing randomly over the white base.
  14. Immediately use a toothpick to drag from the center outwards and outer edges inwards to create a web pattern.
  15. Let the icing dry completely (1-2 hours) before handling or packaging.

Notes

Ensure butter is softened but cool to the touch to prevent spreading. Chill dough for at least 30 minutes. Create the web pattern while the white icing is still wet. Cookies can be frozen for up to 3 months before icing, but do not freeze iced cookies.
