A cozy, slow-cooked apple butter made without any added sugar, using natural sweetness from apples and warm spices. Perfect for spreads, toppings, and a healthy comfort food.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 pounds (2.7 kg) apples (a mix of sweet and tart like Fuji and Granny Smith)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) unsweetened apple cider (or substitute with water)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, core, and chop the apples into roughly 1-inch chunks (about 15 minutes).
  2. Place the apples in the slow cooker bowl. Pour in the unsweetened apple cider, water, and lemon juice. Sprinkle the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg evenly over the top. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours until the apples break down and thicken into apple butter.
  4. Use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker to puree the mixture until smooth. For chunkier texture, pulse gently or mash with a potato masher. Stir in vanilla extract if using.
  5. If the apple butter is too runny, cook uncovered on low for another 30-60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until desired thickness is reached.
  6. Transfer the apple butter to sterilized glass jars or airtight containers. Let cool to room temperature before refrigerating.

Notes

Stir occasionally during cooking to prevent sticking and encourage even cooking. Removing the lid for the last hour helps reduce excess liquid. Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for balanced flavor. Lemon juice helps preserve color and brighten flavor. For thicker apple butter, cook longer or mash more. Frozen apples can be used if thawed and drained first.
